What's actually different about the two
A carpenter-made wardrobe is built on site, in your bedroom, by a carpenter team using plywood sheets, laminate, hand tools, and a power drill. The carcass is fixed to the wall directly. Every cut, every joint, every shelf height is decided live. The wardrobe is permanent — once built, it cannot move with you when you change homes.
A modular wardrobe is manufactured at a factory on CNC machines, edge-banded under controlled temperature, dry-assembled and quality-checked, then transported in panels to your home and assembled in 1–2 days. The carcass is mechanically fixed in modules that can be disassembled and reinstalled if you relocate. The fit is sub-millimetre because the cuts come off a CNC, not a hand saw.
That single mechanical difference — factory CNC versus on-site cutting — drives most of the other differences in finish, durability, and price.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Modular wardrobe | Carpenter-made wardrobe |
|---|---|---|
| Build location | Factory CNC machine | Your bedroom floor |
| Cut precision | Sub-millimetre, machine-cut | Hand-measured, hand-cut |
| Edge banding | Factory hot-press, sealed on all edges | Manually applied, often missing on hidden edges |
| Installation time | 1–2 days, clean | 8–15 days, dust and noise throughout |
| Cost upfront (Ghaziabad, 2026) | ₹1,400–3,000/sq ft | ₹900–1,800/sq ft |
| Lifespan in NCR humidity | 12–15 years (HDHMR/BWP) | 6–10 years (depends on grade & supervision) |
| Hardware | Branded soft-close standard | Basic hinges; soft-close usually extra |
| Internal organisation | Factory-fitted pull-outs, drawers, mirrors, LED | Built piece by piece, fit varies |
| Warranty | 5–10 years from manufacturer | None; depends on individual carpenter |
| Relocatable | Yes — disassemble and move | No — fixed to wall |
| Resale impact on home | Adds value | Neutral |
Where carpenter-made still makes sense
Three situations where a carpenter-made wardrobe is genuinely the right call:
- Highly irregular wall geometry. If your bedroom has uneven walls, awkward angles, or low slanted ceilings that no standard module can fit, a skilled carpenter adapting on-site beats forcing a modular system into the wrong shape.
- Tight one-time budget with no plan to move. If your total wardrobe budget is ₹40,000–60,000 and you're certain you'll stay in the home for 8+ years, carpenter-made delivers the lower upfront price.
- Access to a verified, skilled carpenter. "Verified" matters. A carpenter whose previous three projects you've personally seen, in homes that are 3–5 years old and still holding up, is a real asset.
If you don't meet at least two of these three, modular is the better answer.
Where modular clearly wins
Finish consistency. Factory edge-banding is the single biggest invisible quality factor. In Ghaziabad's monsoon humidity, exposed cut edges on plywood swell within 2–3 years. Modular wardrobes seal every edge under hot-press; carpenter wardrobes typically only band the visible front edge.
Internal fittings. A factory-built wardrobe with proper soft-close drawers, pull-out trousers rack, jewellery tray, and integrated LED looks and works like a designed system. The same fittings retro-fitted by a carpenter rarely sit flush, and the soft-close mechanisms wear out faster because they're not installed with factory torque settings.
Speed and cleanliness. A modular wardrobe in a Ghaziabad bedroom takes 1–2 days to install. A carpenter-made wardrobe takes 8–15 days of dust, noise, and lacquer fumes inside your home. If you have children, asthma, or work from home, this matters.
Resale and relocation. Ghaziabad and NCR are mobile markets. Many homeowners change apartments every 5–8 years. Modular wardrobes can be unbolted, packed, and reinstalled in the new home. Carpenter wardrobes stay behind, written off completely.
The total cost of ownership over 10 years
The upfront price gap looks decisive — until you add what happens between year 4 and year 10.
| Cost element | Carpenter-made | Modular |
|---|---|---|
| Year 0 — build | ₹70,000 | ₹1,10,000 |
| Year 3 — hinges/channels failing | ₹6,000 replacement | Covered by warranty |
| Year 5 — laminate edge swelling | ₹15,000 patch repair | None |
| Year 7 — full hardware replacement | ₹12,000 | None |
| Year 9 — relocation | ₹70,000 (rebuild) | ₹15,000 (disassemble + reinstall) |
| 10-year total | ₹1,73,000 | ₹1,25,000 |
The modular wardrobe ends up cheaper by year 9 even though it cost 57% more upfront. This calculation assumes one relocation in 10 years — typical for NCR.
